Is nail polish unhealthy?

Perhaps you have never thought of this. Everyone uses it, so it must be ok, right? Wrong. Many nail polishes contain potentially harmful chemicals: hidden inside the container, you don’t even know they are there. So, what chemicals should you look for and avoid in nail polish?

– Formaldehyde
– Formaldehyde resin
– Toluene
– DBP (dibutyl phthalate)
– Camphor

Just looking at those names, I would not want to put them on my toenails (I think I remember most of those from the chemistry lab). Those harsh chemicals can actually dry and damage nail plates as well as cause yellow or white discoloration, opposite of the perceived protection that most polish users think polish provides. Furthermore, those chemicals can cause skin and systemic effects, including skin irritation/dermatitis, allergic reactions, and reproductive/nervous system symptoms.

Is there an alternative? Is there a polish that doesn’t contain those toxic chemicals? We carry and recommend Dr.’s Remedy Enriched Nail Polish. This polish does not contain the aforementioned chemicals and is actually enriched with Vitamins C & E as well as wheat protein and lavender to promote healthy nail growth. The polish also contains the natural antifungals tea tree oil and garlic bulb extract, thus making this polish ideal for treating and preventing fungal infections of the toenail.

And while we are talking about this subject, nail polish remover contains acetone which dries nails and depletes them of natural oils and minerals. A great alternative is Dr.’s Remedy Remover, an acetone free, enriched polish remover that doesn’t dry nails.
